Coming home and finding an open gate, hole under the fence, or having a dog escape when opening the front door can be one of the saddest days in a dog owner’s life. The uncertainty involved relating to your pet’s health, location and reunion abilities can take its toll on people. Fortunately, there are ways to better your chances when dealing with a missing pet situation.
The biggest, of course, begins with prevention. Having your dog microchipped, wearing a collar with correct and updated identification devices, and having recent photographs of your dog can be a big help.
Be sure to telephone your vet, city’s animal control, and if possible the microchip company to report your dog lost. Provide an accurate, detailed description and notify each agency if there are any current medical conditions your dog experiences. This way, if your dog is found, the owner can be contacted and the dog’s medical needs can be immediately addressed.
After notifying important telephone contacts, it is now time to rely on technological assistance. Go online and find as many local community sites as possible to create a lost dog announcement. Provide a description ensuring the dog’s name, breed, gender, color and date/time/place last seen are mentioned. Be sure to upload a recent photograph and provide two means of contact information. This way, if you are away from your computer or telephone, you or a family member can still be reached.
Next, create similar lost dog announcements and use them as distributable flyers. Canvass the neighborhood and post/hand deliver them in the direction your dog most likely headed. Finally, be sure to check your dog’s living quarters. While it may sound strange, often dogs will surprise their owners and appear on their doorstep or crawl back under the holes in fences; especially if it is close to the dog’s bedtime or mealtime.
