While most pet owners agree that there isn’t anyone in the world who loves their pet as much as they do, there will be times when an animal needs the kind of care that only a trained veterinarian can provide. Finding a vet that makes owners and pets feel comfortable will play a key role in an animal’s health and well-being.
Where to Begin?
Asking friends, neighbors, co-workers, family, a shelter or other pet group for recommendations is always a good place to start. Looking through phone books and on the Internet is a way to find vets in your neighborhood. Convenience is key, as you will not want to travel too far if ever a pet needs immediate care. Once you have selected one or two veterinarians that are close to your home, call and ask basic questions like those listed below, and make an appointment if you are satisfied with the answers.
Your first appointment will provide you with an opportunity to meet the veterinarian and ask specific questions that will help you to learn about the kind of care provided at that facility. Here are some questions to consider asking to help choose a vet that is right for you and your dog:
Basics
- What are your hours during the week and on weekends?
- How soon can I make an appointment?
- What are your fees?
- Do you offer payment plans?
- Do you accept pet insurance?
Pet Care
- Is there more than one veterinarian on staff?
- Are you available for emergencies and on holidays?
- If my pet needs to stay overnight, will there be staff here?
- Can you provide me with copies of my pet’s medical records?
- What is your opinion of alternative medicine and supplements?
Training
- How long have you been in practice?
- Have you received any special training?
- Have you ever treated animals with special needs or certain illnesses?
- Do you make referrals?
Facility
- Where are cats kept relative to dogs?
- Do you board dogs and/or offer grooming services?
Miscellaneous
- Do you have pets of your own?
- Do you work with any pet groups or shelters?
Questions to Ask Yourself
- Does the veterinarian and staff make me and my dog feel comfortable?
- Are my questions well-received?
- Is the facility clean and odor-free?
Most dogs don’t like visits to the veterinarian but as a pet owner you can help to make the experience less stressful by choosing a vet that reflects your own values and demonstrates a high level of care and concern for your pet. If you’re located in the tri-state area, be sure to visit North Shore Animal League America’s Pet Health Center – offering highly qualified veterinarian care at unbelievably low cost.

I think asking your friends for recommendations is always the best advice.
