Just as moving to a new city, state or even local location can be a stressful experience, it is can also be that way for dogs. The type of dog who suffers the most anxiety over moving is also the kind who suffers from separation anxiety. Usually these were abused or frequently re-homed animals who have trouble forming bonds and fear change.
Fortunately, there are some techniques owners can implement to reduce a pet’s anxiety levels:
- Prepare your home before allowing your dog to visit
- Replace or professionally clean carpet and flooring to eliminate all signs of previous pets
- Scrub baseboards and other low-lying areas to supplement the process
- Perform a safety check both inside and outside to inspect any loose or exposed areas that could cause your dog injury
If your new home will have a yard, ready it before your dog comes over:
- Mow grass so it is leveled and remove any harmful objects that may be ingested or cause injury
- Check fencing to ensure it is durable and does not contain any sharp, rusted or splintered parts
- Once the yard is ready, bring your dog over to explore it with you. Play a favorite game of fetch or Frisbee to associate happy feelings with the location.
Even if your new home does not have a yard, before moving in, if possible, take your dog to its new home. Have a dog’s favorite treats, bed and other items placed in designated areas. Your dog can take comfort with these familiar smells and reassuring items.
On move-in day, your dog may have special needs. Due to the unfamiliar location, a dog may act timid. It may be a good idea to leave on a nightlight for the first couple of nights until your dog becomes acclimated to the home’s layout. Additionally, since a dog may be anxious, try to walk it more often and have some puppy pads available in case a bathroom emergency occurs.

A pet is an animal kept for companionship and enjoyment or a household animal, as opposed to livestock, laboratory animals, working animals or sport animals, which are kept for economic reasons. The most popular pets are noted for their loyal or playful characteristics, for their attractive appearance, ccnp, or for their song. Pets also generally seem to provide their owners with non-trivial health benefits;[1] keeping pets has been shown to help relieve stress to those who like having animals around. There is now a medically-approved class of "therapy animals," mostly dogs, that are brought to visit confined humans. Walking a dog can provide both the owner and the dog with exercise, fresh air, and social interaction.

Thanks for the helpful article! I just moved into a new place with our 4 (!) pets a few months ago - time and patience are the only things that guarantee success. My mutts actually were pretty fine, but one of my cats ended up destroying our furniture and decided to move herself - into our guest bed! Patience, lots of cleaning solution, and time lead to her eventually figuring out that she was safe and home.
